HKFTU has been working hard for the rights and welfare of workers for more than 70 years. Even during such a pandemic, HKFTU has not forgotten its principle of "patriotism, unity, rights, benefits, and participation". Given this, in the Honours List announced by the SAR Government, Chan Yuen-han was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star, Wong Kwok, Lam Mam Fai and Tang Ka Piu were awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star, and many members have also received the Medal of Honour and Community Service Award. HKFTU Women Affairs Committee has been fighting for the rights of working women over the years. As early as 1981, it strived to implement full-pay maternity leave and finally successfully extended the statutory maternity leave to 14 weeks. The Employee Rights Concern Group of HKFTU monitoring the Government Anti-epidemic Fund reckoned that the two rounds of anti-epidemic fund were inadequate. From June to August, it has constantly suggested that the government should directly assist workers and should start the legislation of the unemployment assistance system as soon as possible. Concerns include the neglect of the people without MPF accounts, direct assistance to the workers with increased subsidies, insufficient support for the industries, and the set-up of a long-term unemployment assistance scheme.
HKFTU is fully supportive of the Hong Kong National Security Law, regarding that it is incumbent for HKFTU to facilitate the promotion and implementation. Having set up numerous street counters in May and June, HKFTU aims at collecting signatures from the public to express their willingness to support the law jointly. To improve Hong Kong stability, HKFTU fully supported the decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress to define the qualifications of members in Hong Kong Legislative Council in accordance with the Constitution, the Basic Law and the Hong Kong National Security Law, which has permitted the SAR government to penalize members who do not comply with relevant laws and regulations.
The "Love Upgrading Special Scheme”course offered by the Employees Retraining Board was halted due to the epidemic, making the unemployed workers lose training allowances and value-added opportunities for a career change. To alleviate the problem of drug shortages, HKFTU assisted the HKSAR government in delivering medicine to Hong Kong residents who were stranded in Guangdong and Fujian. From February to December, it has sent out more than 30,000 packs of medicine to over 30,000 people. This accomplishment depended on the cooperation and the participation of the governments, the Shenzhen customs, courier companies, 1400 volunteers and 560 pharmacists.
After the epidemic, the demand for masks has dramatically increased. With the idea of "making our own masks", FTU Employment Development Service Limited has set up its own mask factory.
